Developing assertiveness

At WorkBoost, we help you develop assertiveness. Identify your meaning of assertiveness, change your inner dialogue, be clear and specific in communication, practice gradually and ask for feedback for growth.

Assertiveness is an important skill that comes in handy in many aspects of our lives, whether in our work, relationships or personal lives. Yet being assertive can be difficult for many people. This can lead to frustration, stress and missed opportunities. Fortunately, assertiveness is a skill that can be developed. At WorkBoost, we specialize in developing knowledge, behavior and self-confidence, and we’d like to share our tips for developing assertiveness.

Identify what assertiveness means to you

Assertiveness can mean something different for everyone, depending on context and personal preferences. Some people see assertiveness as voicing their opinions without hesitation, while others see it as standing up for their rights and needs. Identify what assertiveness means to you so that you have a clear goal in mind.

Change your inner dialogue

Our inner dialogue can have a great impact on our behavior and feelings. Talking negatively to yourself can make you insecure and cause you to not dare to be assertive. Therefore, try to be aware of your inner dialogue and change it to positive and supportive thoughts. For example, say to yourself, “I have the right to express my opinion” or “It’s okay to stand up for myself.”

Be clear and concrete

It’s not just about expressing your opinion, but also about communicating your needs and boundaries. Be clear and specific in what you want and expect. Avoid vague or general wording and provide specific examples. For example, “I want us to schedule our meetings at a different time from now on, because I will have more time to work on my tasks.”

Practice with small steps

Developing assertiveness can be challenging, especially if you are not used to expressing yourself. Start with small steps and practice in situations that are not too stressful. For example: ask the waiter to refill a glass of water or ask your colleague to speak more quietly. The more often you practice, the easier it becomes.

Ask for feedback

Ask for feedback from people you trust and respect. You can ask them how they perceive your assertiveness and what areas for improvement remain. Feedback can help you further develop your skills and boost your self-confidence.
